FAQ
Organic cosmetics in a solid form is an innovative and new form of cosmetics. Learn more about solid organic cosmetics, their advantages, properties, and useful tips on how to use them.
We at Rosenrot are among the pioneers in the world who manufacture organic cosmetics in a solid form. While we do not only offer 'solid organic cosmetics', solid organic cosmetics are at the heart of our manufacturing philosophy. This is because its solid form comes with many advantages, especially in relation to sustainability and environmental protection - and this suits our spirit nowadays. This is why we see solid organic cosmetics as the future of cosmetics. There are no disadvantages in terms of cosmetic quality and effectiveness compared to liquid cosmetics. A win-win situation for humans and our precious environment.
The example of the ShampooBit® is an excellent way to describe what solid organic cosmetics actually are and how they work (the same applies to our other solid products such as the ConditonerBit or the ShowerBit®):
You can consider the ShampooBit® as a normal shampoo, just like you get in a bottle. The difference is the significantly lower water content that is contained in the ShampooBit®. Therefore, the ShampooBit® is comparable to a concentrate and thus very economical. Apart from that, it has the same effect as a liquid shampoo of comparable quality. The big advantage is the elimination, or at least the reduction, of packaging. One has to ask the question: How many plastic and glass bottles can I, as an individual user, save by using a solid shampoo for life? In addition, the ShampooBit comes without preservatives, parabens, mineral oils and silicones. Switching from liquid to solid shampoo can be done from one day to the next without any problems. However, some customers report about a 1-week 'getting used to' stage for the hair. Indeed everyone's hair is different.
Rosenrot's solid shampoos, the ShampooBits®, are based on a mild, eco-certified coconut-based surfactant. Combined with precious certified organic oils, 100% natural or certified organic essential oils, precious active ingredients and fine raw materials, the result is a concentrated, mild and gently nourishing solid shampoo. It avoids plastic packaging, is plastic-free, 100% biodegradable and also vegan (except honey).
Solid shampoo should not be mixed up with hair soap. The manufacturing process based on saponification is completely different in this case, which is why the PH value also differs from that of a solid shampoo. Solid soaps are usually more complex to use than solid shampoo. For example, there is usually a longer transition phase in which the scalp has to get used to the soap. Also, a solid shampoo contains additives that make the hair shiny and smooth. And with the use of a hair soap, a cold rinse with vinegar is often necessary afterwards.
A solid shampoo is very efficient. One 55g ShampooBit®, for instance, replaces about two medium-sized shampoos in a bottle when used properly. This is due to the fact that very little of the extremely high-yield shampoo concentrate is needed for shampooing. Just rub the ShampooBit® briefly in your hand and lather it up, then work it into damp hair - and you're done. The efficiency can be further increased by dissolving the remaining small pieces of ShampooBit® in water at the end of use and then reusing it as liquid shampoo (e.g. in a small reusable glass bottle).
When it comes to storing, there are no limits to the user's own creativity. Many of our customers have already shown us their own great, homemade storage solutions. In general, a solid 'bit' should be put down and stored in such a way that it can drip off and dry. Afterwards you can put it into a closed container for transport (e.g. for traveling). For storage, soap dishes or soap trays in lattice form are ideal, for example. Many great manufacturers offer wonderful products here. Also many unpacking stores have beautiful products for this purpose. Also natural loofah discs, which are offered at Rosenrot 'specially hand-cut', are ideal for depositing soap or shampoo in the bathtub, shower or sink. The excellent air circulation allows the soap or bit to dry very well. The natural loofah can be washed up to 40 degrees in the washing machine. In addition, the bits should always be stored so that they do not get water in the shower.
Using solid shampoos saves a lot of packaging material (mostly plastic bottles) and thus makes a big contribution to environmental protection. Rosenrot is one of very few to offer the Bits without any packaging at all. You can buy the Bits without packaging, for example, in one of the many great unpackaged stores that carry Rosenrot products, or via their own webshop. Because the fact is that the most environmentally friendly packaging is 'no packaging'. Sometimes the bits are also packed in cellophane (100% biodegradable and compostable) for protection or they come with an environmentally friendly recycled cardboard box.
ShampooBits are very handy and small and therefore very convenient while traveling. In general, any box or tin of suitable size can be used for this purpose. Rosenrot offers its own BitBox® (tin) made of aluminum which is very practical for travel or sports. The BitBox fits a large ShampooBit® (55g) or a small loofah plus small shampoo. The box is lightweight and very handy and is also easy to recycle. Recycling aluminum conserves natural resources and saves up to 95% of the energy normally required to produce metal. Before storing the ShampooBit® in a closed box, please always allow it to dry thoroughly before placing it in the box. The ShampooBit should not be stored moist in the closed box for too long! After transporting, open the lid again so that air can get to the product.
What is the difference between hair balm and conditioner?
Both are treatment products intended for after shampooing to improve the combability and lightness of the hair.
- Hair balm is richer and creamier than the conditioner. Especially recommended for thick and heavy hair.
- Conditioner is rather a little lighter and provides a lot of airiness.
It is a matter of taste, one likes it and the other prefers it.
The ShampooBit® becomes thin and brittle towards the end, what can I do?
Unfortunately its not possible to prevent the ShampooBit® from becoming thin and brittle at the end of the process.
- You may also use it over the ridges
- Dissolve the remaining bits in water (liquefy one small crumb with a little bit of warm water) and then use it.
- Collect and form it with wet hands into a ball
- Use leftovers for socks/wool sweaters, etc. waking, etc.
What should I do if hair combing becomes complicated after washing?
1. comb hair before washing, then wash thoroughly and only squeeze dry.
2. use a very large brush, it works best by having space between the bristles.
3. distribute some hair oil or any cream on the hair (not onto the roots).
4. wait a short time until the oil is absorbed.
5. use a very large brush, this is best done with a lot of space between the bristles.
6. start combing from the bottom, not from the roots.
If that doesn't help:
You could try combing only after you air-dry your hair.
Why are 2nd choice products not always available?
Because we do not produce these products especially for this purpose. Only if a product is not quite as pretty as it should be, it goes into the 2nd choice category. Check every now and then if something is available.
Does a coloring in my hair washes out when using the ShampooBits?
A tint will always wash out, no matter what kind of shampoo you use. Our ShampooBits do not wash out a tint more than any other commercial shampoo.
Is glycerin free of palm oil and organic?
Our glycerin (organic) is certainly free of palm oil and has a moisturizing effect to the hair.
Is it acceptable to use ShampooBit® to wash the body (shower)?
Yes you certainly can, especially when traveling it is very practical. Especially for showering ShowerBit - a solid shower gel is available. The fine piece is adapted to various skin needs. But after all, skin needs something different than hair.
How can I store the solid conditioner?
Please always keep it outside to allow it to dry off nicely. We do not offer a special container for the conditioner (for transport). But our soap box made of liquid wood is also suitable for this purpose.
Is the conditioner suitable for all hair?
Except for oily hair, the conditioner is suitable for all hair types. Also for streaked or colored hair.
Does the conditioner has a summer break?
No, the conditioner is always available throughout the year.
How long is the durability of ShampooBit® / Conditioner and where can I find this information?
The ShampooBit® has a durability of 16 months starting from production date. The best before date is indicated together with the L-number (lot) as a label on each product (cellophane or cardboard box). If you buy in an unpacked store, please ask the staff, it may also be written on the container.
What is the degree of overfatness of ShampooBit®?
Since ShampooBit® is not a soap, there is no over-fatness level.
Do I need an acid rinse after using ShampooBit®?
An acid rinse is not necessary because it is a real shampoo and not a hair soap.
Is it possible to wash outdoors with the ShampooBit®?
Of course you can shower outdoors with it, because it is 100% biodegradable. Ideally, you should use the product on solid ground and not directly in open waters, so that the (fully degradable) washing-active substances are diluted or degraded during seepage. This prevents the surface tension of the water from being disturbed.
Does it need a changeover period?
In rare cases it needs some time, because all the old chemicals (silicones, hairspray, etc) have to be washed out of the hair at first. Afterwards, the natural hair appears and needs to be fully nourished, which also takes a little time. But the perseverance is worth it. You will be rewarded with soft beautiful hair, which shines great.
Why don't you send samples?
Our products are quite expensive to manufacture as well as very time-consuming. On top of that, there are shipping costs for each package. This is simply beyond our scope. We produce small sizes, which can be purchased to try out which variety is the right one for you.
Is there also a possibility to order a sample package or something similar?
No, unfortunately we do not offer a sample package.
What is the difference between a soap and solid shampoo?
- A soap is made by saponifying oils with NaOH and is therefore slightly alkaline. When using hair soaps, it is therefore usually necessary to rinse with acidic rinse.
- A solid shampoo contains (similar to a liquid shampoo) a surfactant as a washing substance and has a PH value in the skin-neutral range. Therefore, it is as easy to use as liquid shampoo and does not require a rinse to follow.
Which of your shampoos is most suitable for sensitive skin (i.e. the mildest)?
We carry the "Shampoo fragrance-free", which is recommended for sensitive skin (e.g. children). It is particularly mild when lathered in the hand and not directly on the head, as it is a concentrate. Use a lot of water and little shampoo. Our shampoo also stings the eyes, so please be careful.
Which of your shampoos is best for colored hair?
All our shampoos are also suitable for colored hair.
What is the difference between a soap and ShowerBit®?
- A soap is made with lye and has a PH-value of approx. 9-9.5.
- The Showerbit is made with an ECO-surfactant and has a PH-value of approx. 6.
Think of it this way: e.g. one person prefers strawberries, the other apples - both are fruit. Both for washing, the rest is preference, just feels different:-)
What is the degree of superfatness of each soap?
- The degree of overfatness is part of our recipes and can therefore unfortunately not be published in detail. Our Rosenrot soaps are very nourishing due to our selected degree of overfatness. You will feel the difference.
Which soaps can be used for shaving?
Any soap can be used for shaving.
What does "natural fragrance" or "perfume natural" stand for on the ingredients of your products?
- It means that our fragrances in our products are 100% plant-based and contain no chemical additives.
Is the glycerin palm oil free and organic?
- our glycerin(kbA) is of course palm oil free and has a moisturizing effect on the hair.
Is palm oil used in Rosenrot products?
- We try to avoid the use of palm oil in all our formulations. However, sometimes this is simply not possible, as certain raw materials, such as emulsifiers or surfactants, cannot (yet) be produced naturally without ingredients derived from palm oil. For this reason, we only use raw materials in our products that contain palm oil from an RSPO certification and where no rainforest is harmed for the cultivation.
Is the squalane in the hair balm of plant origin?
Our squalane is purely herbal and is extracted from olive oil.
How to pre-order (2nd choice) products?
Unfortunately it is not possible to pre-order any products.
Do you offer soap making workshops?
Unfortunately, we do not offer soap making workshops at this time.
Why don't you send samples?
Our products are quite expensive to manufacture as well as very time-consuming. On top of that, there are shipping costs for each package. This is simply beyond our scope. We produce small sizes (30g) of ShampooBits, you can purchase a sample and test it.
Is there also a possibility to order a sample package or something similar?
No, unfortunately we do not offer a sample package.
Are there also points of sale?
On our website you might look at the lower section to find your nearest point of sale. You may find all stores that do offer our products.
Can I purchase plastic-free goods online?
We do not use any plastic in our shipping but recycled boxes only, cushioning material made from plants and cellophane (cellulose & water) and recycled paper which is water dyed.
The individual products are not packed in plastic but in cellophane = 100% biodegradable.
Which is the "strongest" deodorant? (for heavy sweating)?
The deodorizing effect of our deodorants in all products is excellent. Due to the essential oil mixture, the deodorant creams "Lime" and "Sea Fresh" are more powerful. The deodorant cream "Pure" does not contain any essential oils, therefore this deodorant is somewhat weaker.
Could the facial care oil "Anti-Aging" also be applied to the eye area?
The face care oil is of course for the entire face, please just make sure that nothing runs into the eye.
What is the correct storage Bodybutter?
Dry and not too warm, because the Bodybutter begins to melt at a little over 30 degrees.
